IFA 2014: TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik to present vintage microphones for professional use

  • Presentation of high-end vintage dynamic microphones for professional use, both on stage and in recording studios
  • Own research ensures simple operation and the reliability of state-of-the-art studio technology to revive legendary vintage sounds

Frankfurt am Main/South Windsor, Connecticut (USA), 03 September 2014 – At this year’s International Consumer Electronics Fair (Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) in Berlin, TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik will for the first time be presenting its high-end products in the professional sound-studio segment on stand 101 in Hall 2.2. From 5 to 10 September 2014, the latest dynamic microphone models based on vintage industrial designs will be presented to the public. These are already used by many well-known music stars for live shows and studio recordings.

Snoop Dogg, Green Day and ZZ Top are only some of the many famous artists who rely on TELEFUNKEN’s high-end microphones and vacuum tubes for their studio recordings and live shows. Reflecting earlier classic microphones and tube amplifiers, TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik develops and produces various types of vintage microphones in the US based on classic industrial designs, including its Dynamic M80 series which meets the highest demands in the professional sphere. TELEFUNKEN microphones offer an impressive sound, perfectly reproducing the tone of vocals, guitar amps or rack and floor toms.

„As our US partner, TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik is a powerful premium manufacturer of high-end microphones and professional studio equipment, whose products are also available in Europe. They are known across the world for their excellent and detailed acoustic reproduction and unique historic authenticity, promoting the tradition of the TELEFUNKEN brand by virtue of their quality and excellent performance,“ says Christian Mayer, Managing Director of TELEFUNKEN Licenses GmbH.

At this year’s IFA in Berlin, TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik will focus mainly on presentation of the following microphones:

TELEFUNKEN M80 Dynamic
Thanks to its wider frequency response and higher SPL capabilities, M80 delivers condenser-like performance in a rugged dynamic design. It is equally suitable for vocals, instruments or drums, both on stage and in the studio.

Due to its low mass capsule and super thin, yet rugged capsule membrane, the M80 ensures an excellent sound transmission, for instance in the case of live vocals, which has been traditionally reserved for studio quality condenser microphones. The head and capsule assembly has been designed to reduce any proximity effect to which nets added low-end clarity for vocals. And yet the microphone still sounds solid and strong in the bass range, but at the same time “open” and “airy” without added danger of upper midrange feedback. The M80 also features an American-made custom wound impedance matching transformer, which is where the magic really takes place.

■ Features: Dynamic moving coil; Size: 184mm x 48mm; Weight: 371g; Frequency Response: 30Hz – 18kHz, Output Impedance: 200 ohms; Connector Type: 3-pin male XLR
■ Retail price: USD 249.00

TELEFUNKEN M81 Universal Dynamic
The M81 made by TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik is the perfect all-rounder - a true „Universal Dynamic“ and a superior alternative to most midrange microphones in this price-performance segment. Building on the strengths of the M80, TELEFUNKEN M81 retains the same minimal proximity effect, superior feedback rejection and articulate mid-range. However, with the M81, the top end is pulled back slightly, yielding a flatter overall frequency response. This results in a microphone with a clear and soft sound, which is perfect for brighter vocals, guitar tones, percussion and horns. The TELEFUNKEN M81’s tailored frequency response makes this microphone exceptional on electric guitars, percussion, rack and floor toms and brass instruments.

■ Features: Dynamic moving coil; Size: 184mm x 48mm; Weight: 371g; Frequency Response: 30Hz – 18kHz, Output Impedance: 250 ohms; Connector: 3-pin male XLR
■ Retail price: USD 249.00

TELEFUNKEN M82 Kick Dynamic
The construction of the dynamic cardioid M82 microphone borrows heavily from the legendary Neumann U47 tube microphone. It employs a similar headgrille architecture, although the headgrille and body have a durable smooth black finish. The M82 features two separate switches, KICK EQ and HIGH BOOST, these two switches functioning independently of each other. This gives rise to four unique settings, allowing the user to tailor the microphone´s response to the source. The KICK EQ switch engages a passive filter which reduces some of the lower mid-range frequencies at around 350Hz, which are commonly cut when processing a kick drum. This helps to keep the kick drum from sounding „boxy“ and allows the low end to remain strong.

The HIGH BOOST switch raises the upper mid-range and high frequencies, starting at around 2kHz with a 6dB boost by 10kHz. For kick drum use, this allows for more beater attack and a more modern sound when placed inside the drum. If the microphone is placed just inside the hole of the resonant head, the M82‘s tailored frequency response captures both the beater attack and shell resonance without a need for multiple microphones. For a source such as vocals or guitar amps, the high boost provides further articulation and airiness in the upper register.

Although the M82 was originally designed with the kick drum as its primary application, the two EQ switches make it suitable for a multitude of sources such as vocals, percussion, broadcast voice, guitar and bass amplifiers, as well as organs and brass instruments.

■ Features: Dynamic moving coil; large rugged 35mm diaphragm; Size: 155mm x 63mm; Weight: 635g; Frequency Response: 25Hz - 18kHz, Output Impedance: 300 ohms; Kick EQ and High Boost switch; Connector: 3-pin male XLR
■ Retail price: USD 399.00
